Who issues medical licenses in New York?
The New York State Education Department, Office of the Professions issues physician licenses, with the State Board for Medicine advising on standards. New York does not use a stand-alone medical board the way most states do, which is why the forms and process look unfamiliar to out-of-state applicants.
Does New York participate in the Interstate Medical Licensure Compact?
No. New York has not joined the IMLC. A physician licensed in a compact state must still file a complete New York application through the Office of the Professions.
What mandated coursework does New York require?
New York requires infection control training and child abuse identification and reporting coursework, plus prescriber education on pain management, palliative care, and addiction for practitioners who prescribe controlled substances. We coordinate the approved providers and attach the certificates to the file.
What is the difference between a New York license and registration?
The license is permanent; the registration is what authorizes you to practice and must be renewed on the Department's cycle. Physicians routinely get caught practicing on a lapsed registration while holding a valid license. We handle both.
Can I practice in New York while my application is pending?
Only under a limited permit, and only where the Department's conditions are met — typically in an accredited training program or under defined supervision. We evaluate limited permit eligibility as part of intake.
