EIN vs. ITIN: Which Do You Need?

EIN and ITIN sound similar but solve different problems. Confusing them costs months of bank-account and tax-filing delays.

An EIN identifies a business entity to the IRS. An ITIN identifies an individual without an SSN. Most new businesses need an EIN; foreign-national individuals filing US returns need an ITIN.

Key terms

EIN (Employer Identification Number)
9-digit IRS number for business entities. Required for payroll, bank accounts, and most filings.
ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number)
9-digit IRS number for individuals not eligible for an SSN who must file a US tax return.
